I think if a person we're going to try to rely on whatever the news provides for dietary information, it would be a significantly awesome way to make you feel completely crazy.
I am constantly reading studies and perspectives on food because honestly, it's one of my biggest interests...how food affects our cells, organs, hormonal regulation, energy, longevity, disease risk...even our sense of connection and resilience.
I get lots of things popping into my news feed, after Christmas it was all “10 Keto dishes to make you feel great” and “why Keto is going to save your life” and “why this expert says Keto” “and how this celebrity thrives on low carb”
Every day, one more headline, but then, just last week….it shifted to “why carbs can save your life”
To be honest, I didn't click on any of those articles, but what I get from them is, this is what people all are faced with, an array of information where everybody says something completely different and they're basing it all off of….well….nothing.
Yes, I know there are studies about almost everything, but most of them are poorly done at best. For example, did you know the studies citing longevity by caloric restriction were found to be inaccurate? Reality is, the same effects were found to occur if just Polyunsaturated fats were avoided and toxins reduced.
Other truths:
Low carb diets promote low thyroid and mood disorders and sleep disturbances...but are still said to be health-promoting
High protein diets without sufficient carbohydrates cause calcium regulation issues enhancing aging, raising risk for cancer and low cell energy conditions.
Low carb combined with high protein and fat results in cortisol response and whole-body stress followed by serotonin regulation issues and lowering of metabolic rate.
What to believe?
Well, for starters, the data….
Health is defined by real body parameters should include:
Strong consistent energy
Bowel movements at least 1 or day
Sleep sound and solid
Clear mind
Happy, joyful mood
Resistance to infection
Urination 4 to 5 times per day
Clear skin
Temperature consistent at 98.6 or above
Pulse rate consistently at 75 to 85
A strong libido
Calm mind
Zero pain
Zero headache
Easy digestion absent of gas, bloating or discomfort
Zero identified health conditions
So, perhaps it would be better to ask….does your diet do that?
Notice, nowhere here am I speaking of weight...weight should be the last goal, after achievement of health, because being skinny without being healthy is ridiculous.
But that isn't the mantra or message of those writing the articles, because the public version of health is really rather poor.
I can't count the number of times I have had women tell me how their doctors have dismissed all their signs of ill health because their labs appear normal.
We have no definition of health beyond
You look okay
Your labs are normal
So, let me ask, do you want to follow the diet or health or for that matter emotional, mental or other advice of a system which regards your health with such little acuity?
I suppose, you just need to ask yourself one question…
How do you want to define health?
Is it by the list above? Is that a vision you can hold for yourself?
If so, how long will you settle for less than that with the halfway diets and mediocre programs out there based on nothing than one size fits all measures of lackluster health at best?
Every day, I help women claim vibrant healing defined by the parameters listed above, all of them.
What would that do to your life?
Are you ready to claim it?
Blessings
Dr. Julie
