The Acupuncture Reset Button

Uncategorized Jun 14, 2016

I often laughingly say I spend my day giving people medicinal naps. It’s a joke but profoundly true, as Acupuncture…which I spend most days facilitating, if done right can really press our reset button, something from what I can see, we as a population are in desperate need of.

It’s a sad fact that in our modern life, we rarely stop and just be still. In fact, just the other day, I had two separate conversations with patients about the lack of time in their lives for simple stopping. Burdened under a litany of “should do’s” and “must do’s” many find their day racing along, finally almost screeching to a halt around 9 or 10 when they concede that yes, tomorrow will come all too soon and it must be time to crawl in bed.

So, how do we navigate this unwieldy terrain of modern responsibility? I suppose our collective rates of coffee, beer, and sugar consumption are one way…not the most-healthy or balanced but certainly a way. But preferably, we would carve out moments of stillness, purposely set aside for restoration and renewal where there is nothing left to do but BE. See, the more stimulated we get, via driving, cell phones, internet, messaging, kids and jobs, the more active our mind, and our stress response. It may seem like we get still, perusing Facebook between events, but all this reading, scrolling, and liking is really only fuel for a very unfortunate fire, one being lit in our endocrine system, in our adrenals.
I suppose it comes down to how we define activity. This may be our problem, we have loads of activity which is in fact not active. This activity tells our body that there are unending lists of things to be concerned about, to be focused on, tasks to do, information to categorize and it all coalesces into a stress response indistinguishable from running from a bear. Sadly, for most people, after years of this, and in the case of our children, having grown up in this environment of hyper-stimulation, the effects aren’t even noticed. Where we should be feeling racing heart, short of breath and a bit wide-eyed, we feel “normal”.
Acupuncture may offer just what we have been missing. See, the reason so many fall asleep during a session is the needles are doing something more than just stimulating a few nerves or providing regional pain relief. Acupuncture is an elegant medical modality within which points, which connect internally to all of our organs, glands, and systems are given stimulation to allow them to clear the circuits per say and subsequently press the reset button.
I can’t even count the number of times I have had someone tell me after a session just how refreshed and renewed they felt and continued to feel for days afterward. Maybe it isn’t possible for some to carve out an hour of stillness in the cadence of their busy life right now, maybe the “should do’s” and “have to do’s” are really real and much too daunting to change at this moment. But ignoring the effect all this constant moving is having on us only sets us up for problems in the future. There is no cure for our modern lifestyle, but there is a remedy, remedy in silence, in stillness, in being reset even if just for a moment.
